The Catholic Church Has Got Nothing to Do With the Orlando Massacre

What the Media does NOT emphasize to you about the Orlando shooting?

The Archbishop of Miami (in Florida, wherein Orlando also is), Thomas Wenski, has publicly rebuked another bishop’s claim, Bishop Robert Lynch of St. Petersburg that religion, including Catholicism, should be blamed for the Orlando shooting, because of its teachings which often “breeds contempt” for lesbians, gays, and transgendered people. Bishop Robert Lynch claimed:
“Sadly it is religion, including our own, which targets, mostly verbally, and also often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people. Attacks today on LGBT men and women often plant the seed of contempt, then hatred, which can ultimately lead to violence.”

Archbishop Thomas Wenski then rebuked him during his homily:
“Where in our faith, where in our teachings — I ask you — do we target and breed contempt for any group of people? In today’s second reading, St. Paul teaches us: ‘Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. There is neither Jew nor Greek… there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’ Our faith, our religion gives no comfort, no sanction to a racist, or a misogynist, or a homophobe. In any case, Christians who support traditional marriage did not kill 49 people Omar Mateen did. Religion and freedom of religion did not enable the killing and the maiming that we witnessed last Sunday. An evil ideology which is a corruption of Islam did… a regime of ‘political correctness’ wishes to impose itself on us and force us to conform ourselves, our values and our beliefs to the ascendant secularism of our time.”

Reminder of why gay marriage is not allowed in the Church, from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

The Catholic Church teaches that same-sex attractions are “objectively disordered,” but those who experience them “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided” (CCC 2358).
The Catholic Church also teaches that “under no circumstances” can homosexual actions be approved. Such actions “are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity” (CCC 2357).

Many comments in the social media confuse, the people, or bring wrong notion, about the reasons why the killer Omar Mateen killed the victims, who were LGBT people. The commenters usually say that this was the product of Christian people, Catholics in particular, who don’t support gay marriage. Supporters of the LGBT Community in the social media think that Christians who only want traditional Marriage, between Man and Woman alone, just like this confused Bishop said, results into hatred and contempt for gays. Many members of the LGBT Community blame the Catholic teachings for spreading “hate instead of love,” which all of us Catholics know IS NOT TRUE.

The Media then support these wrong comments, and it masks the real reasons why the shooter killed his victims. What they rarely talk of, or emphasize to you is that Omar Mateen was gay HIMSELF. His friends said that he hated himself for being gay. And he was a Muslim who pledged his support with ISIS, a terrorist group responsible for Christian massacres in the Middle East. It could be about his Islam religion, or not. Only he knew. But clearly, it was personal reasons. It was gay who hated other gays. But clearly, the Media only says “This is a hate crime for gays. Don’t hate, but love!,” which USUALLY is addressed to the Catholic Church who is not open to gay marriages. It’s in fact, a hate crime for gays, but is not brought about by the Roman Catholic Church’s stance against gay marriage. And it’s caused by an individual hatred. People then, including this Bishop, because of the Media’s avoidance about the real life of the killer, get confused as if it’s the religion that put hatred into this killer’s mind… when he wasn’t even Catholic, and he didn’t like himself for being gay. Probably, it’s because truth HURTS sometimes.

Omar Mateen ex-wife, Sitora Yusufy, was reported in New York Post that “she believed he was homosexual — as it was revealed that he frequented the gay nightclub.” In other sources, he used Grindr for “gay hookups.”

Evidently, the Catholic Church has got nothing to do, at all, with this massacre.

Let us pray for our Church and the clergies.
