Saint Clare of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy in the 12th Century. When she was eighteen years old, she heard her brother, Saint Francis of Assisi, preached his Lenten sermons. This inspired in Saint Clare a strong desire to follow the Gospel and offer herself to Jesus as a chaste spouse. On Palm Sunday, Saint Clare left the comforts of her home and with the help of her brother, joined the Benedictine nuns. Her sister Catarina followed in her footsteps of holy vows, took the name Agnes, and stayed in the same monastery next to the church in San Damiano.
Other women joined them in serving Jesus and their religious order became known as “Poor Ladies of San Damiano.” They lived a life of prayer, poverty, austerity, and solitude- eating no meat, wearing no shoes, and doing manual labor. In the years following, Saint Clare devoted her life in growing women in Christ and sent religious daughters in various places to start a convent. She was canonized two years after her death, and later, her order was renamed to “Order of Saint Clare.”
Saint Clare, who totally loved and served the Lord, pray for us!
