Saint Helena, also called Saint Helen of Constantinople, was the mother of Constantine, the first Christian Emperor of Rome. Discovering the True Cross was her significant contribution to the history of the Roman Catholic Church. That was the cross upon which Our Lord Jesus was crucified. According to historical accounts, Empress Helena went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where she uncovered the Holy Sepulchre after having a pagan temple covering it destroyed. This led to the finding of the True Cross as well as the Holy Nails, the nails which chained Jesus on the cross.
Saint Helena had been a strong influence for Christianity not only to her emperor son but also to the rest of the Western civilization. She had built many churches both in Rome and in the Holy Land, and had given charitable help to the poor.
Saint Helena, who had known true holiness by finding the Cross and Our Lord in her life, pray for us!
