Born in a noble family in a castle in Burgundy, France, Saint Bernard was raised by his devout parents to be pious, well-educated and well-versed. He possessed natural wit and a charming personality that enabled him to be a positive influence. Thus, it was no surprise that when he decided to give up his earthly desires and become a monk, his uncle, brothers and close friends showed their support by entering the monastery and becoming monks as well. Later on, Saint Bernard’s superior, seeing his potential as a leader, tasked him to establish a new monastery, which became known as the Abbey of Clairvaux, with Saint Bernard as head or ‘Abbot’ in Latin.
Saint Bernard also participated actively in defending Pope Innocent II in the period of twelfth century when schism, which means split or division, from an antipope heavily challenged the unity of the Church. Through Saint Bernard’s eloquence, brilliance, and faith, he was able to secure the support of majority of the Christian world for the Pope. He spent the remaining of his years still in the cloister, but his extensive knowledge of the Bible, devotion to the Blessed Mother and writings for the faithful made him become a Doctor of the Church.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, who offered himself for God and His Church, pray for us!
