Saint Rose of Lima was born as Isabel Flores de Olivia in Lima, Peru to Spanish parents. She was so beautiful that they nicknamed her “Rose.” Saint Rose had always wanted to become a nun, even though her parents did not agree. Even as a child, she would always pray and fast as a form of penance and practiced purity. Her father eventually allowed her to join the Third Order of St. Dominic at twenty years old. She would heavily pray for long hours, did extreme fasting, eating no meat, and wore a heavy silver crown that pierced her flesh, which reminded her of the Crown of Thorns.
Saint Rose died at the age of thirty-one, with her whole city recognizing her acts of charity for the needy. She is known as the first American saint.
Saint Rose of Lima, who lived a life of true spiritual beauty, pray for us!
