Saint Augustine of Hippo

Patron Saint of Brewers

Saint Augustine of Hippo is considered the patron saint of brewers because of his story of conversion from drinking, partying, and worldly life. He is an inspiration to those who seek conversion, especially from repeated sin or vice they struggle to stop.  Although brought up as a Christian by his mother, Saint Monica, Saint Augustine spent his younger years living in sins of impurity and rejection of faith in Christ.  But with the fervent prayers of the pious Saint Monica, and the help of the preaching of Saint Ambrose, Saint Augustine has finally accepted the truth of Christianity.  At first, he did not think he could live a life of purity.  Then he received an inspiration to read the Letters of Saint Paul, in which the faithful apostle talked about leaving the sinful life to a life of imitating Christ, and this truly helped Saint Augustine in his conversion.

After getting baptized, he became a priest, a bishop, and founder of religious priests.  He also famously wrote “Confessions,” an autobiography of his conversion to Christianity.  He devoted the rest of his life in prayerful devotion and charity for the poor to overcome his sinful past and become one of the Catholic saints we venerate.
