This day the Church commemorates the martyrdom and passion (beheading) of Saint John the Baptist. Without fear, Saint John the Baptist preached and proclaimed the coming of the Kingdom of the Son of God. He was imprisoned for rebuking the divorce of Herod from his wife, Phasaelis. Herod also unlawfully and immorally took his half-brother’s wife, Herodias, as mistress. Herodias’ daughter, Salome, as instructed by her mother, asked for Saint John the Baptist’s head on a platter in return for her dancing for Herod and his guests. Herod reluctantly agreed and ordered the execution of Saint John in prison.
Saint John the Baptist, who prepared the way of Our Lord Jesus, pray for us!
