This day the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The earliest known document that commemorates this feast was from a sixth-century hymn written by Saint Romanus, an ecclesiastical lyricist in the Eastern Church. The Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal writing from the second century, first narrates the story of Our Lady’s birth. It tells us that Mary’s holy parents, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne were a childless couple. But the Lord answered Saint Anne’s prayer for a child. With so much joy on the birth of Mary, conceived and born without sin, the holy couple consecrated her as a gift unto God.
Truly, the Blessed Mother is the “Cause of our joy,” as one of the titles in her Litany says. We rejoice in Our Lady’s birth as God entrusted her to be the Mother of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and being the holiest of all God’s creation, the spiritual mother of all men.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
