Saint Matthew was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and one of the four evangelists. The son of Alpheus, he most likely hailed from Galilee. He worked as a tax collector, which was one of the most hated jobs during those times. As written in the Gospel, Jesus came to Matthew in a collection booth at Capernaum and called on him, “Follow me.” Without any hesitation, he rose and became a faithful disciple of Jesus.
The Book of Matthew is the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament. Saint Matthew wrote his account on the life of Christ around 41 to 50 AD in Aramaic language. He wanted to strengthen the faith of his fellowmen that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. It is believed that he went to other lands such as Parthia and Persia when persecution broke out after 42 AD though there was no record of how and when he died. The emblem of Saint Matthew is often depicted as a winged-man.
O Glorious St. Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who founded a Church of the New Covenant.
Obtain for us the grace to see Jesus living in his Church and to follow his teachings in our lives on earth so that we may live forever with him in heaven.
