The Prayer Before A Crucifix is a Roman Catholic prayer that is said while kneeling before a Crucifix or gazing at an image of Jesus on the Cross. It speaks of the longing and reverence that we must feel in our hearts for Our Savior. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of the earnest desire for true contrition and a life of virtue that we ought to have in our souls.
In its closing lines, the prayer quoted a Psalm of lament of David, Psalm 22, verses 17 to 18. The prayer is thus a poignant and touching invitation to all of us faithful to contemplate the Crucified Jesus—to reflect deeply on His Passion and His most precious wounds, which are eternal, physical testament to the unfathomable love of God for man.
